Sarah-Jayne Clifton starts as Jubilee Debt Campaign Director

Sarah-Jayne Clifton, formerly at Friends of the Earth International, has started as Jubilee Debt Campaign’s new Director.

Sarah-Jayne joins Jubilee Debt Campaign from Friends of the Earth International the largest international grassroots environment justice network, where she coordinated FoEI’s international programme on climate and energy justice, driving forward campaigns on carbon trading, energy justice, climate finance and the UN climate process. She also served as chair of FoEI’s international campaigns committee. Sarah-Jayne replaces Nick Dearden, who was Jubilee Debt Campaign Director from 2008.

Sarah-Jayne Clifton said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be taking up the post of Jubilee Debt Campaign director. Through work in the global justice movement over the last decade I’ve come to know and deeply respect JDC as a dynamic and highly effective campaigning organisation and a critical voice tackling issues at the heart of economic justice.

As the global finance sector deepens its hold over our governments five years on from the crash, and communities around the world bear the brunt through punishing austerity and debt slavery, now more than ever we need to tackle illegitimate debt and rein in the exploitative, out-of-control global finance system that underpins it. I can’t wait to get started driving forward JDC’s critical campaigning, educational and movement-building work for debt justice.”

Roger Chisnall, Co-Chair of Jubilee Debt Campaign’s Board, said:

“Jubilee Debt Campaign is delighted that Sarah-Jayne is joining us, and we extend to her our enthusiastic welcome, at what is the most exciting time to be working on the issue of debt. The catastrophic damage caused by the global debt crisis continues to ravage the poorest countries the most, but now damages ordinary people across the world.

“Vulture funds pick at the bones of those in slavery to debt. Greed and reckless lending thrive unabated, while ineffective Governments and broken democracies fail and fail again to properly regulate finance. The need for debt justice has never been stronger and we declare again our call for a Jubilee for justice. We declare freedom from the slavery of unjust debts, and for a financial system that puts people first, and we are enthused and excited that Sarah-Jayne joins us to build for the coming moment, when we will see debt justice.”
