Crushing personal debt has grown sharply during the pandemic with an estimated 8.5 million people, or 1 in 6, now suffering from over-indebtedness. The impact on individuals and families is huge, with many borrowing just to cover essentials. Links between over-indebtedness and poor mental health are well documented, with 1 in 12 over-indebted people experiencing problems such as depression or anxiety.

Household debt is a symptom of a broken economic model and an urgent social justice issue. We need to grow the movement against unfair debt into a force big enough to win meaningful changes, like freezing evictions and debt write-offs, if we are to avoid a social catastrophe.

Through raising awareness, reducing stigma and building solidarity in our communities, this session will help grow the resistance against unfair debt. We will use community organising principles to educate, upskill and mobilise local activity at a vital time where government coronavirus measures are being withdrawn and the personal debt crisis is coming to a head.
