The Drop the Debt bus set off as usual for its annual mid-summer South West route to Glastonbury Festival.
On board at Worthy Farm were Jubilee Debt Campaigners sounding the alarm of the brewing debt crisis in developing countries whilst alerting festival-goers that it is not inevitable. We are asking the government to reject calls to restart UK loans as aid and call on lenders to sign up to responsible lending guidelines with transparent processes, so as to avoid a repeat of the lending boom of the 70s and 80s. That lending boom set the fight against global poverty back by two decades so our thanks go out to the enthusiastic Glastonbury crowds who signed our postcards and supported our call that leaders ‘Don’t turn the clock back.’
The customary mix of sunshine and downpours didn’t deter people from coming to see what we were up to – it even brought new supporters initially seeking shelter from the rain, shade from the sun or somewhere to rest weary legs.
In front of the bus crowds spilling out from the John Peel Stage where the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, MGMT and London Grammar were headlining were also able to soak up the dulcet tones of some of the excellent musicians playing to support the campaign in front of the bus.
